Review: Magpie by Bojockey

2023 Summer

‘Magpie’ wraps you in a cozy, wool sweater, sits you down in a plush armchair, and tells you a story of disappointment, drugs and the day you choose to die. Equal parts warmth and heartbreak.

Bojockey is not in a rush. Listeners of this UK based indie-folk group freely inherit the satisfaction of this slow burn tune, consistent with the feeling of the rest of the tracks on their latest self-titled album. ‘Magpie’ opens with a fingerpicking acoustic guitar in the forefront and an accompanying moaning slide guitar creeping behind, providing the foundation for its heartfelt, honest and earthy air. A somewhat spoken vocal delivery establishes the straightforward atmosphere. We know we are here to listen to a story, only to develop under a layered collage of vocals later in the track; working to express the anecdote, though giving no impression of working too hard. Drums blend with an uncomplicated beat and fade into a softly accented cymbal, and sprinkled piano riffs add a focal point and dimension. Overall, ‘Magpie’ is a refreshing new release. One that holds our attention, while giving nothing away too soon, unfolding on its own terms.
